Chiropractic care is a healthcare discipline that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders related to the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Chiropractors use a hands-on approach to manipulate and adjust the spine and other joints in the body to relieve pain and improve overall health. Chiropractic care has a long history in the United States, dating back to the late 19th century. In this article, we will explore the history of chiropractic care in the US, from its origins to its current state.
The origins of chiropractic care can be traced back to 1895 when a Canadian-born healer named Daniel David Palmer discovered that he could cure a janitor’s deafness by manipulating his spine. Palmer believed that misalignments in the spine could interfere with the body’s nervous system and cause a range of health problems. He developed a theory that he called “innate intelligence,” which held that the body had an innate ability to heal itself if it was free of interference.
Palmer began to practice his new technique, which he called “chiropractic,” in Davenport, Iowa. In 1897, he established the Palmer School of Chiropractic to train other practitioners. The school was the first of its kind in the world, and it became the center of the growing chiropractic movement.
Chiropractic care faced early challenges as it sought to establish itself as a legitimate healthcare discipline. The medical establishment viewed chiropractors as untrained and unqualified, and many state medical boards sought to prohibit them from practicing. In 1907, the American Medical Association (AMA) formed a committee to investigate chiropractic care. The committee’s report, published in 1908, was highly critical of chiropractic and recommended that medical boards not grant chiropractors licenses to practice.
Despite these challenges, chiropractic care continued to grow in popularity. By the 1920s, there were more than 10,000 chiropractors in the US, and they were treating millions of patients every year. Chiropractic care became particularly popular in rural areas, where medical care was often scarce.
The early decades of the 20th century saw numerous legal battles over chiropractic care. In many states, chiropractors were arrested and charged with practicing medicine without a license. These legal battles often went all the way to the Supreme Court, which generally upheld the rights of chiropractors to practice.
In 1922, the first chiropractic licensing law was passed in Kansas. Other states followed suit, and by the mid-20th century, chiropractic care was recognized as a legitimate healthcare discipline in most states. In 1974, the US Congress passed the Chiropractic Medicare Coverage Act, which recognized chiropractic care as a covered benefit under Medicare.
Today, chiropractic care is a widely accepted healthcare discipline in the US. Chiropractors are licensed in all 50 states, and they are recognized as primary care providers in many states. Chiropractors are also eligible for reimbursement under most insurance plans, including Medicare.
Chiropractic care is used to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal and nervous system disorders. Common conditions treated by chiropractors include back pain, neck pain, headaches, and joint pain. Chiropractors also provide preventive care, such as ergonomic and posture advice, to help patients maintain their overall health and prevent future injuries.
