Who gets Runner’s Knee Pain?
According to the Harvard Medical School, runner’s knee is more common in women than in men, particularly in women of middle age. People who are overweight are especially prone to the disorder. Traumatic injuries can happen to anyone, this can easily be the cause of your knee pain. Of course, athletic-minded people are subject to Runner’s Knee. So let’s just say many people can have a problem with their knees.
What to do if you have knee pain?
The most proactive course of treatment for the runner’s knee is outlined below. Treatment is aimed at alleviating pain and increasing strength range of motion. Treatments may include:
Orthotics- A custom-made insert for your shoes can help stabilize the foot and correct pronation or supination defects that can cause you to have knee pain.
Shock Wave Therapy- This therapy allows for increased angiogenesis to the muscles of the leg that help support the knee. Enhanced blood flow will allow the knee to heal faster.
Trigenics– This advanced treatment allows special nerves called Golgi Tendon Organs and Muscle Spindle Cells to establish proper communication between the tendons and muscles to the brain. Aberrant muscles and tendons fire off improper signals. Once corrected normal muscle and tendon activity is re-established with the brain.
Blood Flow Restriction Bands- These bands create a deficit of blood flow thus creating more demand for blood. Increased blood flow allows for faster healing from your knee pain. Blood Flow Restriction is done with leg exercises and can help heal a damaged knee much faster than NSAIDs alone.
Knee on Trac– This device allows for enhanced production of synovial fluid by stimulating glycosaminoglycans to hydrate the meniscus and the cartilage in your knee.
Aerobic exercises that minimize stress on the knee like stationary bikes and elliptical trainers allow for the full range of motion sans added stress on the knee.
NSAIDS can help with inflammation until the knee is healed.
Core Health Darien has found this regimen to be successful especially for people who want to avoid knee surgery or replacement. If you have any questions call Dr.Brian McKay 203-656-3636.
