shockwave for backpain

Back Pain Meet Your Match

Back Pain That Won’t Quit?

Maybe you tried everything to get some lasting relief from chronic lower back pain. Sometimes massage, physical therapy, or even chiropractic care is just not enough for you to feel better. How many medications can you possibly ingest, and yet you continue to suffer? Well, I may have some hope for you.

Shockwave Therapy Also called EPAT

Shockwave therapy has many names EPAT- Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology. Here is how it works, Pressure waves are created by the pneumatic head of the handpiece. The waves create a force that is translated to the damaged tissue. The wave breaks up adhesions that form in the fascia(the nerve-rich covering of the muscle) that restrict free movement and causes pain due to the increased friction. You would think deep tissue massage would alleviate such adhesions, but it does not match the concentrated force that the EPAT can provide in one short session. Often patients report instant improvement.

How Shockwave Therapy Works

The pressure wave stimulates angiogenesis which is the creation of blood vessels. More blood flow means faster healing time. Also with more blood flow, there is better transport of cellular debris associated with overworked muscles. Try and think of the enhanced metabolic activity and what can do for you when you have chronic back pain.

Are There Side Effects of Shockwave?

There are a few minor side effects of EPAT/shockwave. Redness, bruising, numbness, and tingling. You would not be a good candidate for shockwave if you are on blood thinners or have nerve disorders, and if you are pregnant. But for the most part, it is very safe and effective to relieve the chronic pain associated with long-term back pain.
